There is a new announcement made by Elon Musk as he launches a new AI company, known as xAI, after a few months of a plan to make a rival against ChatGPT. Elon Musk will lead this company, as per the website, and they will work with Tesla, X (Twitter), and other companies to complete their mission. The website indicates that the primary goal of AI is to understand the nature of the universe.

Musk first supported OpenAI, the startup behind ChatGPT, but then criticised it for adding protections meant to stop the popular chatbot from responding in a biased or sexist manner.

Even while xAI didn’t disclose the topics it will be working on, the business did mention that its team of 11 experts comes from leading tech firms, including Microsoft Research, DeepMind, OpenAI, and Google. Musk suggested that the reason he chose July 12, 2023, to announce the launch of xAI had something to do with the science fiction classic “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” by Douglas Adams. He pointed out in his tweet that the number 42, which the novel famously asserts is the solution to existence, is equal to adding the dates 7-12-23.

The History of xAI and Musk with Artificial Intelligence

Former workers of well-known AI firms OpenAI and DeepMind, as well as Microsoft and Tesla, make up the team at xAI, which is led by Musk. The Centre for AI Safety’s director, Dan Hendrycks, is named as an adviser. Concerns about safety have received a lot of attention from the Centre for AI Safety. The group declared in a statement released in May that “reducing the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority along with other societal-scale dangers such as nuclear war and pandemics.” The statement was supported by various experts, AI scientists, and CEOs of some of the top AI organizations. Among the signatories were Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, DeepMind CEO, and Demis Hassabis.

Elon Musk didn’t sign the statement from the Centre for AI Safety, but he did sign an open letter from the Future of Life Institute that was published in March and urged businesses to stop training AI systems for at least six months. Musk was one of the founders of OpenAI along with Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Elon Musk was among a group of investors who committed $1 billion to fund OpenAI in 2015, including Altman, Reid Hoffman, Greg Brockman, Peter Thiel, Jessica Livingston, Infosys, Amazon Web Services, and YC Research.

While xAI will independently work from the parent company of Twitter – X Corp. And, it will maintain a close relationship with both Tesla and X Corp. A company statement focuses on its shared mission to make advancements in understanding reality. Dan Hendrycks will guide the team at xAI to ensure ethical AI development.
